What this is

This is an informational guide: one person’s curated list of places worth the drive, events happening around the region, and offers worth knowing about. It is offered free of charge and provided as it is, without any warranty.

It is not professional advice of any kind — not travel, safety, financial or real estate advice — and nothing in it is an offer or a solicitation.

Where the listings come from

Events are gathered every morning from the calendars that venues, downtown associations and cities publish themselves. Freebies are read from each business’s own page before they go up, and every one carries the date somebody last read it. Every listing links to its source, and the source is the authority — not this guide.

Third parties change their minds. Times move, tickets sell out, offers end early, venues close, a page goes stale between one harvest and the next. The guide cannot know about a change until the source publishes it.

Call ahead

This is the important one. Before you drive anywhere on the strength of a listing here — especially for a limited-time offer, a seasonal opening or anything with a queue — check with the venue or business directly. Treat everything in the guide as a starting point and their own page or phone line as the answer.

The guide sells nothing

There is nothing to buy here. It does not sell tickets, take bookings, process payments, hold an account or sit between you and any business. Any transaction you make is entirely between you and them, on their terms.

Offers listed as freebies belong to the businesses that run them, and any conditions on them are theirs to set, honour or withdraw — at any time, without telling us.

Links to other places

The guide links out constantly, and deliberately — a venue’s own page is a better source than any paraphrase of it. Those sites are not ours. We do not control their content, their availability, their terms or their privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement of anything beyond the listing it supports.

Getting out and about

A good part of this guide is beaches, dunes, trails and water. Conditions on Lake Michigan change quickly and are yours to judge on the day. Follow posted signs, flags and local guidance, and use your own judgement about what is safe for you and whoever is with you.

Boards and anything you save

There is no account, so there is nowhere for your things to live but your own device. A board you make on this site is kept by your browser, and what you save in the app is kept on your phone. None of it is sent anywhere, and nobody — including us — holds a copy.

The other side of that is worth knowing before you build something you care about: clearing your browser’s storage, browsing privately, switching browsers or deleting the app takes your boards with it. There is no backup to restore from. A board you want to keep should be shared or downloaded rather than left in one browser.

The content itself

The writing, the photography and the curation are the work of Rennie Barton and remain his, except where a photograph carries its own credit — those are used under their own licences, and the credit line stays with the picture wherever it appears. You are welcome to share links to the guide. Republishing it wholesale is a different thing, and worth an email first.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, the guide is provided without warranty of any kind, and neither the guide nor its author is liable for loss arising from your use of it — including a wasted journey, an event that did not happen as listed or an offer that was no longer running. Some jurisdictions do not allow every exclusion, in which case only the ones they allow apply.

Changes

The app carries its own copy of these terms as text inside the binary rather than as a web page, so it can only change with a new version that has been reviewed. Continuing to use a version means these are the terms it came with. This page can be edited sooner than that, and the date at the top says when it last was.
